RVLM neurone - optical microscopy

Optical micrograph of a rostral ventrolateral medullary (RVLM) neurone imaged on a Zeiss light microscope, at the University of Sydney.  The single neurone has been labelled with a biotin marker infused while recording intracellular activity.  The biotin compound is then reacted to form the black deposit which labels the neurone.  The neurone has been photographed and rendered into digital format.  The extremely good penetration of the biotin label during recording is shown by the extensive length of the labelled perikarya in this fortuitously cut slice of the medullary brainstem.
