Locus Cœruleus

Superposed micrographs of a locus cœruleus neurone and the locus cœruleus (LC) imaged on a BioRad confocal microscope, at the University of Sydney.  The single neurone has been labelled with a fluorescent marker infused while recording intracellular activity.  The LC has been labelled for an enzyme (tyrosine hydroxylase) and the two separate images combined in software (customised Igor Pro program).  The picture shows a reconstruction of 27 optical slices of the neurone and the LC.  The colours are false colour since the confocal microscope produces monochrome output, hence the different colours shown here than in the home page: these colours are chosen to match those actually seen on optical microscopy.
